Celebrate a 2019 Thanksgiving in DC

Thanksgiving is a time for family and friends to step back and be grateful for all the advantages we have here in this nation.  What better place to spend the holiday than our Nation’s Capital?  The following are seasonal suggestions to enrich your time with family and friends here during Thanksgiving in DC.

The Nutcracker Ballet

There’s something wonderfully nostalgic about a showing of The Nutcracker, and visitors to Washington DC over Thanksgiving can be treated to a performance at the Warner Theatre. From November 30th through December 29th the Washington Ballet brings this story to life on stage, much to the delight of guests of all ages. Tickets range from $67 to $225 depending on seating options and performance night and can be purchased in advance online.

U.S. Botanic Conservatory

Immerse yourself in the spirit of the holiday season by heading over to the U.S. Botanic Conservatory and enjoying the annual opening of Season’s Greenings. This beautiful holiday display is in and around the large Victorian glass greenhouse located adjacent to the grounds of the US Capital Building. For many the highlights of the exhibit are the replicas of famous Washington DC landmarks constructed entirely with plant material, The White House, Jefferson Memorial, Lincoln Memorial among others!  There is more to marvel at including a large model train chugging through a fantastic display of villages and landscape among the greenery, poinsettia displays, rooms filled with orchids, and decorated Christmas trees and wreaths.

National Gallery of Art – Renaissance Artist Andrea del Verrocchio

For lovers of fine art, head to the National Gallery of Art on the National Mall to take in this special exhibit in collaboration with the Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi, Florence and the Museo Nazionale del Bargello, Florence. Andrea del Verrocchio was a master painter and sculptor who taught greats such as Sandro Botticelli and even Leonardo da Vinci. This exhibition is the only one of its kind in the United States and features 50 of Verrocchio’s greatest works.

Thanksgiving in DC Trot for Hunger

You don’t have to be a regular runner to make the most of this annual Thanksgiving in DC tradition for a great cause.  Pre-burn those extra Thanksgiving calories at the Thanksgiving Day Trot for Hunger is hosted by General Dynamics and is an event that brings visitors and locals together in the name of community and compassion. The run is held on Thanksgiving in DC and the central hub for the starting line as well as follow up festivities is Freedom Plaza.
